I swear that I get a "server error" message when accessing my Gmail account more than I actually get logged in. I am sorry now that I made it my primary email account. I mean I know it's in beta still, but by now - considering how many users they recruited, you'd think a major recurring issue like that would be worked out. They need to start calling it ErrorMail.

I use gmail for my freelance work, and i've never gotten any errors. I've seen one time where gmail was down and there was a notice.
I used to get that but it stopped all of the sudden and never came back. Maybe it is some cookie/cache problem. Try this ffox extension I use that alerts you when you have mail (very small and unobtrusive). Then you wont have to check it as much.
